by PR Digital on April 28, 2010

Kumon HarbourneOn Wednesday 21 April teaching professionals and local business representatives joined Kumon students and their parents to celebrate the official opening of a brand new education centre in the heart of Harborne, Birmingham.

The launch event was held to mark the official opening of the Harborne Kumon Study Centre, located in the heart of the community. The centre, based at 326 High Street, is a flagship for Kumon Educational UK, notable as the first study centre to operate from commercial premises in the history of the organisation.

Kumon is the leading provider of supplementary education in the UK and Ireland, offering after-school maths and English study programmes for children. We have 640 study centres across the UK and Ireland and more than 60,000 children currently studying with us. More than 6000 children in the wider Birmingham region currently study with us. Our principal aim is the development of independent learners, and delivering improved core competencies in maths and English.

At the launch event, seven year old Kumon student Naomi, who lives on the outskirts of Harborne, gave a confident first-hand account of how she is benefitting from Kumon and how the programmes are helping her with her school work. Naomi, a pupil at Quinton Church Primary School, has been studying on both the maths and English Kumon programmes for two years, and last year was presented with a Kumon award for mastering maths and English beyond her current school level.

Naomi said:

“I really like Kumon because it helps me with my school work. Since starting Kumon I am faster at sums and get more answers right in class.”

Jessica Abram, Deputy General Manager of Kumon Educational UK, also addressed the audience to give a brief history of Kumon and its instructional methods before explaining the significance of the launch of Kumon’s first commercial premises and the company’s intention to extend this to other areas in the UK.

Vivienne Stiles, who runs the Harborne centre and hails from Warwickshire, has worked in the field of education for over 11 years. She is the mother of two Kumon students.

Vivienne says:

“The event was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the official opening of the centre with our current students, their parents, and members of the local business and educational community. I look forward to developing long-lasting relationships with them all in order to assist the children of Harborne and its surrounding areas in becoming highly motivated and independent learners.”
